“Is that your girl friend?”
The little girls ask
&They keep asking
Everyone keeps asking
And by the way you hold my hand
And kiss my cheek
And call me baby
I can tell you want to say yes
Your eyes scream yes
The honesty in your eyes is so attractive
“blink once for don’t go
Blink twice for stay with me”
As they follow me around the room
Out the door

But when people ask
“is that your girlfriend”
I look for you to say no
I almost say it for you
Because I know how easy it is to get attached
I know how easy it is to get caught up in the moment
And forget its just a moment
And there’s no way it can last
Like this forever
And I don’t want to hurt you
I’ve hurt so many people but I can’t bring myself to hurt you

So as you lay across my lap
I ask what time it is
Trying remind you
That we don’t have eventually
We barely have tomorrow
And today has already slipped through your large hands
And my weak pinkys

You see
You and I
We have a bubble relationship
&bubbles don’t try to be anything they aren’t
They don’t try to last forever
They just pop
But not before flying as high as they possibly can
And we should
love them while have them
Learn from them
Admire them
Remember them

But don’t get too attached
Because eventually they will burst into a million droplet memories of chocolate kisses and music notes and hearts
But that’s okay
I hope you can see that it’s ok for things to leave just as quickly as they came
And it doesn’t mean you didn’t try hard enough
It doesn’t mean we will never be together
It just means we got as high as we possibly could in this moment
And there’s nothing anyone one can do
So we pop

Which is why I don’t think about it
And when you ask I just smile slightly
Because right now we’re something beautiful
And that’s enough
It just has to be.
Our hands intertwine and we are afraid to regret not trying
I draw heart shaped expiration dates behind your ears
Trust me it looks fine
Drawn in pen
For you to sweat out later
